James Foy
James is a partner at Savard Foy LLP. His practice includes criminal and regulatory trials and appeals, with a particular focus on serious drug charges and appeals. Before starting Savard Foy LLP, James worked at one of the top criminal law boutiques in Canada. There, he acted in high-profile and complex criminal cases. He brings a client-centred approach to every case he takes on.
James has a national practice. He has appeared at every level of court in Ontario, the British Columbia Court of Appeal, and the Court of Quebec. Before joining private practice, James clerked for judges of the Ontario Court of Appeal and former Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin at the Supreme Court of Canada. James now uses his years of experience working with judges to advocate for his clients.
James writes academic criminal law articles and has been cited by the Supreme Court of Canada and other courts. He has taught criminal law at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law and as a guest lecturer at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. James is frequently asked by journalists to comment on criminal law issues, especially about police techniques.
James is a member of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association and the Advocates’ Society, the two premier advocacy organizations in Canada, and serves on committees of both. He also is active in the community as a board member of Generator, an arts and theatre incubator in Toronto.
